A Wish To Grab Happiness – Volume 17 – Chapter 570

Chapter 570: Killing a God

There was someone I longed for and yearned for.

More brilliant than the sun, more heroic than any mythical hero. Possessing qualities rarely found in ordinary people, and a natural talent that made the impossible possible. No, even the word “talent” wasn’t enough.

A great hero, an unparalleled individual who kept all others at a distance.

I longed to be like him. I wished to become even a fragment of him.

My life was ruined by that longing, and I strayed from the right path because of that wish. Even so, I still wanted to follow in his footsteps.

The fact that this hero reached such a great state while remaining human was probably one of the reasons I clung to the framework of “humanity”.

No, I absolutely refused to become a demon even after taking that into account. I believed I was going to die as a human since I was born as a human.

But…if remaining human meant I couldn’t reach the form I dreamed of…Yes, If I couldn’t reach the level of a hero who protected others and saved the world with both arms…

Then, I’d become a demon. If longing was what made me cling to humanity, then the same thing made me abandon it.

I didn’t know if this was a good thing or a bad thing. But…

…I didn’t desire the kind of happiness that tasted of mud, obtained at the expense of my longing.

The gears rattled as they turned. The treasure sword unleashed its magical power, transforming my insides into something more suitable for a demon.

Now I finally understood. A demon was, in essence, a being who had become a vessel for fulfilling their own desires.

The instinct of a living being whose ultimate goal was survival got erased, and my entire body, from my fingertips to my toes, became mainly demon.

My body was now that of a demon after my encounter with Vrilligant. The only thing that needed replacing was the inside of my body.

My brain, the organs that stored magical power, even the smallest nerve cells, were all stained with evil. Memories of that time spent as a demon welled up in the depths of my eyes.

The magical devilish beings Rabel and Junelva, and also the great demon Vrilligant. No, more than that, one voice came to mind first.

I instinctively clenched my fingers tightly, and the demonic-turned sword in my left hand began creaking.

「Very well, Lugis. Even as a demon, you’re doing things not much different from a human. And that power is the one you have is borrowed from Drigman, isn’t it? That’s not how a demon fights. It has to be more devastating, more catastrophic. 」

I instinctively kicked off the ground and leaped. I knew I should, and I understood very well what a demon should be.

A demon wasn’t one who led people. It wasn’t one who trusted people. What happened during the Bolvat Dynasty was far from the true essence of a demon.

If one was a true demon…then, their very being had to be a disaster.

「What a wild little demon. Do you think you can wound a god? 」

「That’s enough, great demon. Your myth is over, as it should’ve been hundreds of years ago! 」

I raised my demonic sword high. It took less than a second.

The rugged, purple-lightning demonic sword groaned, threatening to exterminate the species before it. It knew my will, and I knew its feelings.

The demonic sword roared. It absorbed inexhaustible magical energy from its surroundings, becoming a tool solely for its function. Blood boiled. A tremendous powerful swing passed behind my eyelids.

That was what it should imagine. The demonic sword drunk its blood, seized its power, and raged.

「Perfect trampling and one-sided conquest. That’s the true nature of the disaster known as the demon. 」

Even sound vanished as the mass of magic pierced the earth. The black water that represented Zebrililith evaporated, yet the demonic sword continued.

「Old myth, perish here. 」

As if to say so, the demonic sword drained magic from the black water and pierced through the structure…Zebrililith’s shell.

In that instant, only the giant’s shattering remained before my eyes. My blood pulsed. Destruction aimed solely at destruction. The true nature of the disaster laid there. The mass of extreme magic writhed and thrashed as if unleashed from its restraints.

The black water was no longer in sight; only fragments of the crumbling shell remained.

「Run away if you must, Eldith! You hate lizards, don’t you? 」

My head was hot. I felt like I was feverish. Perhaps, I was intoxicated by magic. No, either way, I certainly didn’t have the luxury of worrying about Eldith.

Zebrililith’s counterattack was already peeking out from behind the rubble.

The original plan for god-slaying was to use Eldith’s powers, but it wasn’t something worth pursuing at the cost of losing her life.

Eldith snapped her fingers.

「…How awful. Are you kidding me? What master would avert their eyes from the heroic figure of their knight? 」

Her voice was strong, yet it didn’t hide its insolence. She was truly a queen. I didn’t deserve such a master.

I looked ahead, listening to those words. Behind the rubble…A figure crawling out from the depths of darkness. A giant lizard, in short, a dragon, with shimmering green scales and clicking fangs.

「It’ll be perfect for training. Become good acquaintances with it. 」

Zebrililith’s voice. Although she wasn’t visible, I was actually inside her body. She could speak anywhere, and see anywhere, presumably.

For her, as the progenitor of countless demonic beings, creating a dragon was nothing difficult, as evidenced by what was before it.

This was by no means a mass-produced demon. However. The green dragon exuded the unmistakable aura of a dragon, and its eyes, which paralyzed all who beheld them, were truly a mass of curse. Its dragon breath would absolutely annihilate its adversaries. The former ruler of the heavens was now obeying Zebrililith like a loyal dog.

Eldith raised a cheerful voice in the face of this threat. Strangely, she even wore a smile.

「Eldith? 」

「Ah, no, I’m sorry…But Lugis, to be honest, I’m having so much fun right now. I think this is the kind of journey I’ve always wanted to take with you. 」

It was as if she were singing. It was almost as if my magic had affected her, causing her to become feverish.

But her steps were firmer than ever, firmly planted on the ground.

「The enemy is powerful. But you never give up, always looking forward. I’ll follow in your footsteps. That’s fine, isn’t it? 」

「Yeah, that’s good. It’s like being an adventurer. With you, we could go to a labyrinth city and make a fortune. 」

「Okay, deal. 」

Eldith smiled, letting the origin magic around her hands float in the air.

「Let’s go there. After we kill this god, of course. 」

Neither Eldith nor I stopped walking even in the face of the dragon’s roar. There was someone ahead that we had to kill. Someone who had to be killed.

No, she should have been finished already. Zebrililith was no longer a god but had been reduced to a mere demon. The mythical age created by Zebrililith, Vrilligant, and Flimslat was now a distant memory.

They were nothing more than ghosts clinging to this place. That’s right. Even Altia was the same.

Therefore, they had to be taught the end. Their era was over; the era of those living now had arrived.

「Well, isn’t this perfect? I think we have a chance of winning, Lugis. 」

Eldith snapped her feet and knuckles gleefully, looking at me with her blue eyes. I grinned in response, showing my teeth, as I raised the now demonic sword towards the dragon. I longed for chewing tobacco, but I couldn’t be picky at a time like this.

「I came here to win. Besides, whether it’s against a god or not, death is the same for all. 」

I swung my sword towards the green dragon. There was no longer any need for martial arts.
