A Wish To Grab Happiness – Volume 16 – Chapter 501

Chapter 501: Poison and Magic

A one-on-one battle between the poisonous magical devilish being Junelva and the sorcerer general Mastigius. In the grand scheme of things, it was a miracle for humanity that they had made it this far.

No matter how brave or heroic a person could be, it was difficult to reach a demon in perfect condition. It would be impossible for ordinary humans to fight against tens of thousands of demonic beasts, demons and magical devilish beings.

Unless a hero arrives. A hero capable of killing everything. Beasts, demons, and even their allies. Only a hero could do that.

In fact, there were many who had to face demons with exhausted bodies and stamina after overcoming a thousand rivers of blood and tens of thousands of corpses.

The silver-rimmed ultramarine. The same was true of the guardian Valerie Brightness. She once built a mountain of demonic corpses and even repelled strong demons. There was no doubt that she was a hero.

But sadly. She was a human through and through. Humans had the concept of physical strength, and it was for this reason that in the end she was unable to resist the power of a Great Demon.

The fact that a hero faced a Great Demon unscathed was tantamount to a miracle in itself. How many had hoped for such a sight, but failed to achieve it?

…But today, humanity had to perform another miracle. It would be a miracle for humanity to surpass the mighty of demons.

It was tense, as if time had stopped for a moment. It wouldn’t be strange for life or death to be decided in the next moment.

Naturally, it was Mastigius who made the first move when they faced each other. When it came to confronting each other, it wasn’t surprising that Mastigius would wait and see what would happen. But he could die in the meantime.

The key was to prevent the enemy from using his powers, and the best thing to do was to chop off his head in a single flash.

If that wasn’t possible, then he must at least maintain control. Mastigius’ arms roared, flashing lightning and deflecting with thunder.

「…Destroy it. 」

Mastigius’ arms swung down. It was a single movement. The magic mechanism that had brought down the wrath of the gods turned into a flash of lightning and poured into Junelva’s body.

No, it wasn’t just one flash. Two, three, four. It became countless pillars of light that pierced Junelva as if to destroy her very being. It even took on the appearance of countless fangs.

All in order to kill the enemy before he could react. Speed was everything. All sides. Powerful flashes that even looked demonic were aimed at Junelva’s weak spots from all sides.

「I see. 」

Junelva was enveloped in those flashes and muttered a word while twisting his beak. With just this light, a swarm of demonic beasts was blown away. To be able to produce it in such large numbers was beyond human.

Junelva got convinced. Mastigius had surely gone beyond that limit.

If those flashes were to hit Junelva’s head, even he wouldn’t be able to escape unscathed. He had to prepare himself to be burned to death. That said, it would be difficult to avoid it.

…In that case, he could just melt it away. The contours of the space enveloped Junelva and started distorting and melting.

The sight of the landscape twisting and melting was such that one would wonder if the world had gone mad. But unfortunately, this was reality.

The poisonous disease Junelva possessed was eating away Mastigius’ flashes. To such poison, living things, plants, and even magical powers were all food for it.

But even so, Mastigius didn’t give up.

Yet, no matter how great one’s magic or source was, it wouldn’t be different from a toy if one couldn’t handle such mighty poison.

Junelva was completely different from brand new demons who only had powers to spew out flames. He was able to handle every single drop of that poison, right down to its tip, as if it were a hand or a foot.

While most people who controlled large-scale magic weren’t good at fine movements, Junelva saw that Mastigius was an overwhelming exception. As the words suggest, the number of years Mastigius had become accustomed to magic made him different from others.

However, to Junelva, who had lived for over a thousand years, Mastigius, who had only been alive for a mere years, was like a baby.

「…How unbearable. Normally, you would’ve retreated as soon as possible once you faced my poison.」

Junelva was still unharmed after being hit by the magical storm. Unless he was taken by surprise, the defensive capabilities of the poisonous magical devilish being were outstanding. Mastigius’ great magic, which could be called brutal, was completely consumed by its poison.

Front, side, back, in the sky, underground.

The brutal assault from all directions was meaningless. The poisonous magic corroded Mastigius’ magic much faster than he thought.

「It would be fine if you retreated now, since I don’t mind letting you live. 」

Junelva was serious. Many people needed to die to achieve his and Rabel’s goal. It wouldn’t be a problem if Mastigius escaped.

「I can’t do that…I won’t give up. I’m going all out now. 」

Mastigius replied immediately. And the magical storm continued. There were countless tricks woven into it, including instantaneous deception that exploited time differences and sneaky tactics to catch them off guard.

A sorcerer’s job was to create magic, but a soldier’s job was to deceive the enemy.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that this series of great magic spells was the culmination of Mastigius as a military sorcerer. Sweat ran down his cheeks, and the surrounding buildings and magical beasts were blown apart in the aftermath.

This was undoubtedly the maximum output of magic that Mastigius could unleash. The power of that heat even made the other demons’ cheeks have goosebumps.

But Junelva remained calm as he received that magical wrath.

Deception and trickery of any kind weren’t something new to Junelva. He had thought of anything that a magic user could come up with in the past.

It was true that Junelva’s offensive was being held back. And this maximum output couldn’t last long. There wasn’t a single scratch on his side.

So he waited. Rather than being cautious, Junelva was thinking about how he could gain the upper hand. There was no way something like this could last more than a few seconds.

Or so it was.

Five seconds passed. Ten seconds passed…thirty seconds, and then a minute. The thunderstorm that still enveloped Junelva showed no signs of slowing down.

Even Junelva, as expected, cleared his throat and opened his bird-of-prey eyes as he looked ahead. The battlefield was enveloped in lightning, and he could no longer see what was right in front of him.

It’s impossible.

Junelva muttered softly to himself. There was no way a human could maintain such maximum output for so long. Even though Mastigius was beyond the capabilities of a human, he had exceeded his limits.

This was clearly an abnormal situation, and for the first time, Junelva’s expression lost its composure.

The most fearful thing in a battle was being unable to understand what happened. It would surely come back to haunt him if he ignored something he didn’t understand.

Junelva carefully leaned forward. He was in a fighting stance.

Junelva decided that it was better to take a little risk and get out of this situation than to wait for the situation to change at any moment. No matter what the enemy did, Junelva was confident that he could deal with it. That was a fact, and it wasn’t confidence or arrogance.

So it was inevitable that Junelva had to take a little risk.

And if it was inevitable, then there was someone whom he had to deal with it.

Junelva changed the range of his poison, deflecting a corner of Mastigius’ lightning and forcing his field of vision to open. The view before him became clear. And for a moment, the poison’s density thinned.

The sorcerer was right before his eyes. His large fingers instantly grabbed Junelva’s shoulders and neck.

「…I’m sorry, I lied. I’m going to use all my strength from now on. 」

Mastigius said with his eyes wide open and his fingers burning, and Junelva raised his beak.

It was only at this point that Junelva finally realized the truth. This human was truly intent on killing him.

He believed it was possible, without any hesitation.

Junelva had seen a human with a similar expression somewhere before. A flash of lightning and dust clouds covered his field of vision.

  1. Yep, Lugis and his father-in-law have found common ground. 😅 They are humans crazy enough to think they can kill these gods’ remnants.
