Chapter 472: The Monster’s Name
「But…Sorcerer! We have never rebelled against you, nor have we committed any crimes! So why should we be executed? 」
The village chief, whose hair had turned white, spoke in a husky voice. It had been a long time since he had spoken out loud.
After all, the only time anyone would raise their voices in this village was to scold a child who had been acting recklessly.
It was a very peaceful place, and there was no violence. There were only modest days where people lived with their livestock. It was one of the many villages of the Bolvat Dynasty.
The sorcerer spoke to the old man.
「The weak aren’t worthy of living…There’s nothing that can be done since the magical devilish beings have said so. No one can defy those demons anymore. 」
He spoke calmly. He acted as if he was already used to this kind of exchange. The executions that were taking place in the villages one after another were now approved by the state of the Bolvat Dynasty, so no one could stop them.
It wasn’t evil if authority itself affirmed it.
「Don’t take it personally, Elder. It has been decided. There’s no place for the weak to live anymore. 」
As soon as the sorcerer spoke, the old man’s nostrils were assaulted by the burnt smell. It was a smell he’d never smelled before. A bad, bad feeling stuck in his mind.
「…No, please, ahhhhhhh!? 」
The village was on fire. Screams echoed aimlessly, and green smoke rose. Cows and horses escaped from the stables, and the sound of their hooves added to the already horrifying noise. The old man could see it clearly from the window.
「No way…what is…this…this is sorcerer…why, why!? 」
The old man could tell that something bad had started even with his weakened eyes.
Until the old man saw the truth, he didn’t believe that what the sorcerer had said was true. He wanted to believe it was just a nasty joke, even if there was no reason for it.
But the sorcerer smiled at the old man, who looked piteously, and said the following.
「…It has been decided. That’s all. 」
Green smoke engulfed the village. Nobody escaped. Wherever they went, they were consumed by fire or smoke and died. Those people could feel death with all of their senses, sight, smell, and hearing.
The sorcerers and soldiers of the Bolvat Dynasty continued to watch over them until the end. Among the soldiers were demons and magical beasts. They were there to see how much demonic power had infiltrated this nation.
It now was unclear if that particular sorcerer could be called human. Was he really human as he continued to kill villagers out of loyalty to the demons? No one would answer if asked.
「Well, what do you think? It’s a wonderful scene. 」
The sorcerer spoke to the demonic being beside him in a much more friendly tone than before when he spoke to the old man.
The bird-faced monster, likely a relative of the magical devilish being, answered with a clicking beak. His beak twisted as if he were smiling.
「It’s fine. Our master hates weaklings. 」
If this monster, who was close to the magical devilish being, said so, then it was alright. The sorcerer stroked his chest and eased his shoulders.
Hating the pungent smell, the sorcerer continued to watch the scene with his dull eyes. The scene was the same as always. The screams that continued to echo would eventually sink underground, and only the charred corpses would remain.
Most of the small villages on the outskirts had been burned down. It was time to burn down a larger village. Shortly, the demons would think that burning got boring. Therefore, the sorcerer had to think of something soon enough.
The usual scene became slightly distorted right when the sorcerer began to think about this. There was a snapping sound in the burning fire.
…A magic bullet ran through the air, drawing in wind and creating a storm. It engulfed the fire, trimming down the burning trees.
Next, a mass of thunder echoed loudly, destroying most of the burning houses and trees one after another, just like the magic bullet. Each time, the fires started to subside little by little.
It was a clear example of magic. Only sorcerers could do something on such a large scale.
But in this country, there was no one left who could use magic to save these villages. The sorcerers and soldiers gasped, and the sorcerer’s eyes sparkled.
A voice rang out.
「Hind. Your barbaric magic can be useful at times, huh? Why don’t you relocate to the fire department…」
「…Don’t joke with me, Eileen. My magic is much more refined than yours, which is only useful for war. 」
There were two sorcerers talking in the fading flames. There was no way they could be mistaken. They were from the Bolvat Dynasty.
The vice-commanders of the glorious Bolvat army, which was made up of only talented individuals. Those who were truly called sorcerers.
Eileen spoke with a resounding voice amid the scattering flames and green smoke.
「Ah, you people. You bastards who claim to be sorcerers, and yet, you burn our villages. 」
Her voice was clear and full of emotion. A voice wonderfully used to look down on people. Eileen continued to speak while keeping her usual tone.
「It’s a sorcerer’s instinct to seek glory and power. I have no intention of denying that. But to kill the people you are supposed to protect for that purpose…shame on you, bastards. 」
Appearing from the depths were numerous magical beast soldiers and magical armored soldiers. Eileen’s infection magic covered the entire area, and at the same time, a huge lightning roared.
A large body with magical power in both arms. One of the symbols of the Bolvat Dynasty. The Sorcerer General Mastigius La Volgograd.
「Your priority is to save the villagers first. Do not make unnecessary sacrifices. Teach those who resist what it means to be a sorcerer! 」
The conquest was instantaneous. Their numbers and training were different to begin with. Even if the sorcerers who burned the village had some magical powers, they wouldn’t have been able to resist. The soldiers who followed Mastigius were undoubtedly elites, and the only sorcerers left in the country were the soldiers who were meant to protect.
This time, the opposing sorcerers screamed and quickly fell. They weren’t meant to fight in the first place. They were here to burn the village, after all.
And in the unlikely event that they came into contact with Bolvat, no, Mastigius’ army, they were ordered to evacuate immediately.
Because their mastermind knew that if they were coming this would be the place.
Looking at the devastated sorcerers and demonic soldiers, a man smiled from a hill a little way from the village. The lenses of his glasses reflected the light.
「Here he comes, as expected. But unfortunately, kindness is the monster and if you don’t tame it, you will die! I was clever, wasn’t I!? 」
Kiel Bazarov spoke while laughing and cursing. He seemed to be intoxicated with himself, but also to convince the others around him.
Behind him stood a large number of soldiers and demonic beings. All of these accomplishments were things that Kiel had only obtained after falling to malice.
Kiel thought that he had nothing until then. The title of sorcerer wasn’t even useful to begin with. He spent his days being ridiculed because of that title.
No matter how hard he drove a stake into his heart in order to study and work, he couldn’t be recognized as a sorcerer if he had no talent to wield magic.
Day after day of futile effort. He couldn’t find the right path no matter how hard he tried. And before he knew it, he found himself lost.
Was it misfortune to be born a sorcerer? Or was it a sin to have no talent?
Despite everything that happened, an opportunity fell into Kiel’s hands.
The Great Demon Vrilligant appeared. His fangs destroyed the throne, and the army was half-destroyed. The generals and sorcerers who had been at the top of the country until then were unable to resist evil.
After all, those who resisted had disappeared along with their cities.
Fewer people were in his way after a while. The Sorcerer General led his army out of the country, following a magical devilish being, and the main sorcerers were either killed or held their breath.
「…I was looked down upon as a failure and struggled in agony, but now I’m here! Watch me, Sorcerer General. I’ll show you that good intentions are nothing more than monsters that bring you tragedy! 」
And in the end, I’ll take everything from you. Kiel told his soldiers to advance while clenching his fists and breathing hard.
The demonic beings let out loud roars of joy.
