A Wish To Grab Happiness – Volume 15 – Chapter 449

Chapter 449: The Best Way to Die

Swelling winds and thunderstorms engulfed the battlefield. The clouds temporarily cleared, and a bright ray of sunlight pierced the earth, making the death snow seem forgotten.

A giant and a dragon had once again appeared in battle, spanning the ages. It seemed that the giant had won.

This in itself was a cause for celebration. I could picture Caria’s smug face.

But to be honest, I didn’t expect this to happen.

A thunder dragon that scorched the air. To think that a sorcerer capable of controlling such great magic was on the enemy’s side. At least back in the day, the only person I’d ever met that could wield a great magic like that was Filaret.

This was the worst. I unknowingly gritted my teeth. I put the chewing tobacco into my pocket.

Magic was useful, but it wasn’t that easy to use on the battlefield. Apart from monster-fighting adventurers, magic was supposed to play only a supporting role on the large-scale battlefield.

At least, until the revolutionary of the times, Filaret, appeared in this world.

But what was this thing? It seemed that the Bolvat Dynasty wasn’t just sitting around enjoying the peace. It would’ve been far nicer if they could show that diligence when it came to fighting the demons.

I sighed deeply, yet discreetly so that the soldiers behind me wouldn’t notice. Whatever the situation, this was no time to have useless thoughts in my head. I spoke to my soldiers.

「Okay, the enemy has collapsed. Let’s go. Let’s break those sorcerers’ dignity! 」

In front of Garoua Maria’s gate. I led the soldiers in front of the gate and placed the sword on my shoulder. The breath rising from my throat was unbearably hot. The tension that permeated the battlefield covered my skin.

Caria fulfilled the role I asked her to play perfectly. Now it was my turn to respond. I had to smash the enemy’s vanguard, which was on the verge of collapse, so that they couldn’t recover.

I had 800 soldiers, while the enemy soldiers had a number that made it impossible to see them all. Ah, what a rewarding charge it was.

With my sword on my shoulder, I charged toward the enemy’s vanguard, who were clearly shaken. The inscription “Hero Killer” got illuminated in the sunlight.

The barbaric cries of the soldiers followed me from behind. It felt so strange that I, who used to be the one chasing someone else, was now the one being chased.

It didn’t take long for me to make contact with the enemy, who was close enough. I swung my sword at the head of the confused soldier who had lost his mind from the giant’s flash. The man’s skull got easily shattered and his blood burst into the air.

Next, I sunk the blade into the stomach of another enemy soldier, and then I dug out his throat. And then the next, and the next. Every step I took was an opportunity to kill someone. My cheeks and ears had already tasted the blood of several people.

The chaos of the battlefield was terrifying. An army was like a disciplined group, and it was difficult to control them once they lost their unity. No matter how many times I charged, there was no organized counterattack from the Bolvat army.

But that didn’t mean there was no resistance. A soldier from my own unit, who had been pointing his spear, suddenly had his throat slit and blood got spilled.

It was so quick. The man stopped moving immediately.

I turned my gaze to the front and saw soldiers with different weapons running towards me. They were wearing strange armors, but their movements were strangely agile. Their weaponry was not like that of a normal soldier.

Those were magic armored soldiers. They were supposed to be in the middle of their army, but they were already coming to the front line. It seemed the commander had decided that the front line was in need of reinforcements.

The magic armored soldiers were equipped with a wide variety of weapons, but many of them had the same weapons as regular soldiers.

The magic armored soldiers were created using the finest of magic power. It was ironic that the best method of combat they chose was hand-to-hand combat, where blood, flesh, and brain fluids were scattered, just like regular soldiers.

The magical armors improved their athletic ability, and at the same time made them forget even their fear. Ordinary soldiers became monsters that no regular soldiers could dare reckon with. The higher the sorcerer who possessed it, the greater the effect.

It was a wonderfully cruel trick. It made me want to clap my hands and cheer.

I took a deep breath, then held my breath. Right before my eyes, I saw a magic armored soldier raising his battle axe. I opened my eyes wide, stepped forward as if to entrust my body to the sword, and drew a line in my field of vision.

I could see a line that deflected the battle axe and used that momentum to gouge out the enemy’s neck. It was by no means an easy thing to do, but the sword vibrated its blade as if to say it was a possible charge.

I really began to feel that my sword had a will of its own and was speaking to me. I wanted to reply with a joke or two, but of course, I would be accused of being a weirdo if I were to exchange words with a sword.

Such foolish thoughts made my cheeks relax. And next, I swung my blade along the line drawn in my eyes. The tip of my sword bit into the neck of the magic armored Soldier. The armor was twisting in an amusing way.

The enemy army once again stopped in their tracks, slightly shaken, as the deaths of the magic armored soldiers covered the battlefield. After exhaling, I turned to my own soldiers and said the following words.

「Alright, run! Let’s go again. If you stop moving, you’ll die! 」

We had to keep moving before it was too late. However. As expected of an elite, the Bolvat army recovered quickly. It seemed that a single collapse wouldn’t lead to a complete downfall.

This could become very dangerous. One by one, the soldiers of my own army could die.

That’s why I had to focus. We managed to break down the front line to a certain extent, so it would take a reasonable amount of time to avoid a siege. It would also serve as support for the Steel Princess Vestaline, who was acting as an insurgent force.

A more than satisfactory result for a first battle. There was no doubt about it. My sword bounced off purple lightning as if in response to magical power.

…A faint dull light grazed my eyes. High-speed magic bullets flew wildly across my field of vision. And it wasn’t just one, but several of them. They were reaching through my blind spot, approaching me.

Each one was a little bigger than a fingertip. They shot through the air, emitting a dull iron-like light. Some followed a straight path, while others followed a winding path.

The only thing they had in common was that they were aiming at me, their target.

They were definitely shot by a skilled sorcerer.

I distorted my tongue, but I felt a sort of relief somehow. No, I even thought to myself, thank you for coming.

After all, this was a fierce battle. It would be unpleasant if it went so smoothly. It made me feel like there was an invisible trap set up somewhere.

If that was the case, then it would be better if they acted boldly, even their intentions were malicious.

I gripped my sword and slashed the magic bullets that came straight at me. Several of them grazed my cheeks and stomach, but for some reason no blood was spilled. On the other hand, all the muscles in my body were extremely hot. It was as if the blood flowing through my body was roaring.

Amidst the barbarian sounds of the battlefield, I heard a voice that resonated particularly loudly.

「…Don’t panic! This is just a stupid diversion. Their few charges are insignificant! 」

The owner of that voice belonged to a thin man with a sharp outline. His armament was different from the surrounding soldiers and the magic armored soldiers. And the way he shouted from his horseback was that of a lieutenant. Judging from his decorations, he must had been a general or someone of appropriate rank.

The moment I caught sight of that man, I immediately prepared myself and attacked. In the end, I was prepared to die while killing as many enemy soldiers as I could, a despicable and abhorrent resolve.

…I must kill him. If I could kill the enemy lieutenant here, it would be worth a lot of gold.

Even if I died, Garoua Maria would still have Caria. A large army that had lost one of its lieutenants early-on and had its morale broken would be no match for Caria.

This was the best. This would result in the fewest casualties. I was convinced of that.

When I charged, five of the enemy soldiers died the instant they were touched by my blade. Faced with the threat of the magic armored soldiers, I was reduced to a mere mute lump of flesh, unable to even respond properly.

But I couldn’t stop. I held my breath, and with my eyes wide open, I slammed the purple lightning bolt into the enemy soldiers, slashing them immediately on the spot.

I smashed the skull of the magic armored soldier who seemed to be a guard with the bottom of my sword handle, and something black and red flew into the air. My face got dirty again, and the color of my skin was no longer clear.

The soldiers were becoming less confused. I could hear the lieutenant’s voice right there.

Beyond the rain of blood, I could see a man sitting on horseback.

…Sorry, but you have to die here and now. You’ll have to kill me next time.

I clenched my arms around my waist and raised my sword in a straight line, then shook it off my shoulders. The enemy’s horse let out a sound that seemed like a scream.

Large amounts of fresh blood drenched the surrounding soldiers, followed by the ground and the air. There was a wonderful demonstration of the true essence of battle.

  1. He has become quite battle-crazy… but his strategy seems stupid: if he dies killing a lieutenant, they would just have lost a lieutenant, but his army would have lost its general and hero. Plus, Caria would go crazy.
Thanks for the chapter as always.
