Chapter 65: The Zunana and The Wakame (1)
It was time to leave.
There were a total of 13 people on board, including me, Mercia, the captain (hired by Mercia), three crew members, and seven employees who would be entrusted with the harvesting work.
Since the number of people coming along was small for its size, I didn’t feel cramped.
「By the way, how do you decide the course of the ship? Is there a compass* or something similar we can use?」
The cockpit had a rudder** and a huge lever to adjust the power of the magic stone, but I couldn’t find anything that looked like a compass.
I was guiding them this time, but I wondered if we could get lost without a compass at hand.
「Compass? What’s that? 」
「It is used to prevent the ship from getting lost during the voyage, and it should show a detailed direction.」
While saying “Rashinban mawasu yo”, there seemed to be a way to decide the direction to proceed by turning the compass at the base, but it seemed to be just too difficult to do so in reality.
It was dangerous to rotate a heavy object, and there was a high possibility that I would not be able to proceed in the desired direction.
In other words, it wouldn’t make sense as a compass.
I definitely wouldn’t want to use it that way.
「What are you going to do with the direction? You should use an anchor, right? 」
「Anchor? 」
「Yes. It’s a magic tool that shows you which direction the other is in when you use it as a set of two. The fuel consumption is so economic that you can leave it on a yearly basis, but the reaction is slow, so it’s a little difficult to use. 」
「It’s convenient. Can I use it in battle? 」
「It’s impossible. The reaction is slow, so the battle ends while waiting for the anchor to point in the right direction. At most, you take things from the city when you go into the forest and use them when you go home. 」
「Is that so? 」
I thought it would be useful like GPS***, but it seemed it didn’t work that way.
Was there any other way to use it?
「If one breaks, what happens to the other? 」
「While there are both, the direction of the pair of anchors will be in a bright color, but if one of them is gone, the bright color will turn into a dark color, so it is possible to distinguish. 」
…Oh my.
「Is there a magic tool that can communicate with the island? 」
「There is no such thing. If there was one, the Guild would’ve already used it. 」
「…Can you communicate with the anchor? 」
「Communication with anchor? How? 」
「Take each other and smash them when something happens. 」
「Will that work? 」
「Arrange a lot and we will know when they break in order. 」
「…I didn’t have that idea! Why didn’t you say it earlier? The cost is high, but it’s a communication technology that Guilds and big companies will want to get their hands on pretty quickly! 」
「I just thought about it. I gave it as an idea after knowing the existence of the anchor. 」
It was something that someone would come up with easily, but it seemed that it was quite surprising to come up with it unexpectedly.
Was it because magic was too convenient that the technology had not developed so much even though there were good materials?
「Well, if you use it, you can use it at home or you can teach it to the Guild. I will leave that to you.」
「Is that okay? 」
「It’s a subtle technique compared to medicines, and it doesn’t use anything special. 」
While talking about that, I arrived at my destination.
The distance to the island was only a few hundred meters away.
「Wait a minute. I have something to do. 」
Before setting up the place, I forgot that I still had something to do.
It was a work to flatten the harvesting area of Zunana grass so that the harvesting work would be easy.
If I harvested it, I could leave it as it was, but from now on, my employees would use magic tools to mow the grass.
When using magic tools, it was better to eliminate the unevenness of the ground.
The work itself was easy.
Therefore, I just walked around the island while activating an upside-down landslide.
If I walked around consciously for the area to be flat, it would happen.
It took less than 30 minutes to flatten the entire island, leaving the pond intact.
Finally, I set up a house in a suitable place and the work was completed.
「Okay, work is done, you can come now. 」
I returned to the ship and gave instructions to the captain.
「The island is flat…what the hell happened… 」
「What? I just leveled the ground a little. If it’s just a step, I’ll finish the leveling in about 20 minutes. 」
「Step…? Well, I don’t know what you mean by that. Anyway, people who move to the island should get on a landing craft. 」
「Fine, I’m going to fly, so please ride with the rest. Anyone who can fly is fine. 」
「People don’t usually fly, you know… 」
It seemed that there was no one other than me that could fly in the sky. So all but me, the captain, and the crew were on board the landing craft.
Maneuvering was the job of just one crew member.
「Okay, go. 」
At the command of the captain, the landing craft floated up and flew smoothly toward the island at a position of several meters away from the surface of the water.
I intended to support it from below if something happened, but it didn’t need me at all, and the landing craft arrived safely on the island and in front of the house.
「It’s pretty smooth. 」
「I practiced a little during the test. Fuel economy is subtle, so it was impossible to do it for long, but I can grasp the sense. 」
「You did it in a very short period of time. 」
The landing craft may be easier to handle than expected.
Or was the skill of my hired crew very good?
「Okay, let’s test the magic tool! 」
And so, the preparations to test the magic tool for mowing Zunana grass began.
*An instrument containing a magnetized pointer which shows the direction of magnetic north and bearings from it.
**A rudder is a primary control surface used to steer a ship, boat, submarine, hovercraft, aircraft, or other conveyance that moves through a medium (generally air or water).
