Chapter 521: Unknowing Death nor Fear
The demonic sword, bathed in Lugis’ Original Text, shone with a lightning flash of strange pride. It was screaming as if to show its presence.
How strange. Yes, everything was strange and abnormal to Caria.
Sweating profusely, Caria rushed to the scene, only to find Lugis standing alone in front of Vrilligant. She couldn’t sense Agathos’ presence.
Lugis’ body was full of wounds and blood, and it seemed as if his body was going to collapse.
On the other hand, Vrilligant had minor wounds, and they were by no means fatal. Just like a human being wouldn’t die by having a hand scratched.
The scene made one intuitively realize the hopeless difference in power.
Even Caria, who had fought in countless battles, felt such tension and pressure in this situation that her chest felt like it might burst.
And yet, why was this man and his sword looking down on that mighty creature? Why was a smile plastered on his cheeks?
「Caria, you’d better lie down. Filaret has done it. 」
There was no need to ask what he was talking about. It came immediately.
…A thunderous sound that snatched away the very air.
At the same time that Caria bent down, Vrilligant opened its mouth wide and roared into the air. Its enormous, obsidian-like body twisted, distorting its beauty.
This must be what the word “rampaging” referred to.
With Lugis at her side, Caria leaned her body against a depression in the broken rocks. There was no way she could swing her sword. All she could do was try to avoid being crushed by Vrilligant’s massive body.
Vrilligant, who hadn’t shown the slightest sign of moving his body until just now, was now rampaging freely.
Caria spoke while moving her silver hair from her face. She was speaking faster than usual, maybe because she was irritated.
「Hey, are you sure this is Filaret’s doing? Maybe his body got too full of magical power. If it’s true, then we’ll be unable to stop him. 」
「Come on, you’re saying the same thing as Agathos, Caria…」
Lugis glanced at Caria, standing right next to him, and opened his mouth in exasperation.
「I said, have some faith in your allies. It’s Filaret we’re talking about. She won’t let herself be reduced to a heartbeat. Besides, Caria. We all reached this very moment. Isn’t it right to trust your allies now? 」
You’re the only one I don’t want to hear those words from. Caria was about to blurt them out, but for now, she just distorted her lips and let him finish.
After all, Lugis himself had praised her for performing as expected. That he was right to trust her.
A sense of fulfillment welled up in her chest, and warmth spread across her stomach. Her cheeks unconsciously relaxed. Her ears were turning crimson red.
For a moment, she had worried that he might abandon her, but that had not happened.
No, that was only natural, Caria thought to herself. She was his oldest friend, having been with him since the beginning of his journey until now. There was no way he didn’t trust her. There was no way they couldn’t be together. Obviously.
Caria nodded vigorously several times and raised her eyebrows in satisfaction. The tension and pressure that had been building up in her chest was swept away.
「Vrilligant’s heart has been crushed. Or rather, stolen. If he were merely a usurper, then this would have been enough to defeat him. 」
Lugis tilted his head, watching Vrilligant’s rampage.
His crimson eyes studied the monster that had repeatedly driven him to the brink of death.
Indeed, it certainly seemed that Vrilligant’s magical power had decreased. But he showed no signs of dying even without his heart. He still had enough energy left to inflict death.
That being the case, Lugis couldn’t just leave it alone.
「We need to do the final blow. I’m counting on you, Caria. Can you do it? 」
「…How ridiculous. You know I can’t refuse when you say it like that. But I don’t plan to reject your proposal either. 」
Lugis asked with a smile, and Caria lifted her cheeks and replied. The crimson and purple lightning overlapped in the shade of the broken rocks.
—
A long-awaited pain ran through his body. The Great Demon Vrilligant kept a cool head, letting his massive body move instinctively.
How odd. And it was during this time that he realized what had happened to him.
His heart, which should’ve been fully formed, had been stolen by someone. The magical power within his body had already begun to dry up, and he was crying out for thirst.
This was already an astonishing event. Magical power was like blood to a demon. Death and annihilation were inevitable if it got lost.
But Vrilligant remained perfectly calm. After all, he had experienced it once before. He had transcended it and was here now.
And so, this couldn’t kill him.
To Vrilligant, who symbolized nothingness, death was a lost concept. For him, there was a beginning, but no end.
And so none of the countless dragons, giants, spirits, or even the human hero Altia were able to kill Vrilligant.
And so long as this dragon survived, it would continue to invade and usurp forever. Its condition was truly that of a natural disaster.
Countless civilizations had fallen before his jaws and been destroyed by his breath. The same was true today.
Vrilligant felt a faint amount of magical power flowing through his body and wings. That was enough. All that was left was to steal everything else. He simply needed to continue absorbing magical power.
Vrilligant spread his great wings after bringing his rampaging giant body to the ground. With just that, the rocks were violently blown away.
It felt good. How sweet it was to have magical power all over his body. Vrilligant brought his face close to the ground and saw it.
「Die, you winged lizard. 」
The thing that stood before him looked like a small person. But Vrilligant immediately knew. She was a giant.
Next, a beautiful line of dark crimson was drawn as she swung her sword. A flash of dark crimson reflected in Vrilligant’s enormous eyes.
At first glance, it looked like powerful magic, but it wasn’t.
This was the Giant King’s hammer, wielded, albeit imperfectly. It was the very essence of the great myth.
Vrilligant briefly pictured the figure of the hammer, once ruling the earth, behind his eyelids.
The hammer was the very embodiment of destruction. As the symbol of the Giant King, it could destroy everything in its path. Continents and even the world were within its reach.
Even if it was imperfect, it was an object that wouldn’t let a living being escape unscathed in a surprise attack.
In an instant, the dragon slapped the air with its wings. The dragon distorted space with agility unbelievable for its massive size. Flying through the air in an instant, the dragon opened its mouth to intercept the Giant King’s hammer.
…The Giant King’s destructive hammer and the dragon’s breath collided in mid-air.
It was an absolutely fantastical sight. Black and red exploded, coating the sky in a final glow. As if symbolizing something, the sun plummeted completely into the western sky.
At the same time, the battle between dragon and giant was settled in an instant.
The stalemate, which lasted less than a few seconds, disappeared, and the destructive hammer was completely blown away by the dragon’s breath. The dragon’s roar rained down on Mount Bephimus, still reverberating.
The mountain twisted its body with ease, creating a giant hole. What might have seemed like a joke to humans was actually reality.
This dragon posed a threat large enough to easily devour an entire human city.
The dragon, who knew no death, no fear, and no end, had its eyes wide open.
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the world was one step closer to its end.
And so, the dragon decided to kill that giant, who pose a small threat.
「…Hey, Vrilligant. Don’t worry. I’ll kill you here today. 」
From the base of the dragon’s neck, the hero spoke, looking down on its very being.
