Chapter 513: Wonderful Day
Every child heard bedtime stories. Whether it was from a parent, sibling, or the adults around them. Every child knew this story at some point.
A long time ago, there was a dragon crowned with great evil.
The dragon led over a thousand demonic tribes and claimed dominion over the continent. Its breath turned the earth to scorching heat and the air to poison. Even fate was held in its hands.
That dragon committed all sorts of heinous acts of evil. The story of the great evil dragon Vrilligant, who eventually died after its heart was crushed by the one and only god, Altius.
All children heard this story, sometimes excited, sometimes frightened. Most of them asked their parents the following question.
So what would happen if the evil dragon were resurrected now?
…The answer to that question was about to be revealed here and now.
The capital of the Bolvat Dynasty. The soldiers, the citizens, and even the surviving magical beasts who escaped alive were all watching.
The dragon opened its great jaws and stretched its body out from Mount Bephimus. Its massive body was clearly visible despite being far away from the capital. And the dragon’s roar echoed in everybody’s ears.
Everything they could perceive was strange. None of it seemed like something from this world. Everyone was simply overwhelmed by the sight that showed before their eyes. Even the magical beasts weren’t overjoyed on their king’s return, but they were rather in a state of shock.
The appearance of the Great Demon Vrilligant was so vivid and shocking that it made them feel nauseous.
Everyone was remembering the story they had heard as children. The myth of a dragon piercing the heavens.
—
The Dragon’s breath. It didn’t burn or destroy. It simply snatched the enemy’s very existence and annihilated them entirely.
One had to prepare to be annihilated in order to face it head on. That’s how much of a threat it was.
And yet how did they manage to survive amidst that threat? The Jewel Bar Agathos was breathing heavily as she drifted through the air. The jewels dancing around her glittered desperately, crawling around Vrilligant’s blind spot.
The magical devilish being who stood beside her had also managed to escape with his life.
「Ah, I see. What a frightening breath. Was it coming from Vrilligant, a dragon, or from Vrilligant, a mighty demon? 」
Agathos suddenly turned her gaze to Lugis, who was baring his teeth and lifting his cheeks as he spoke. Agathos couldn’t tell if his expression was forced or natural.
But the sight of him smiling while touching his terrifying sword was too demonic. How could he laugh? Against that thing. Against that monster.
Come to think of it, she heard his voice the moment she saw the breath.
Agathos opened her mouth to mutter.
「Hey, you did something…Okay then. But what’s with that smile? Have you’ve come up with a clever plan? Or maybe you don’t want to make an enemy of an awakened Vrilligant? Well, I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t want to make him your enemy. It’s not cowardly, you know. 」
Agathos’ sarcasm and words of resignation were obvious. Although her voice was composed, she raised her eyes in frustration while biting her lips.
Her goal was to rescue Filaret while Vrilligant wasn’t awakened. Otherwise, there would be no way to dig out the monster’s heart.
At this point, retreating would be the only thing to do no matter how good she was at fighting.
It would be a lie to say that there was no regret or humiliation. A flawless jewel could become corrupted after being forced to retreat without achieving her goal. But the opponent was too cruel and powerful.
In response to Agathos’ words, which were filled with remorse, Lugis lightly replied.
「Oh, my, how amazing. It’s just like the evil dragon I heard about in those bedtime stories. It makes my heart flutter…so how are we going to kill it, Agathos? 」
Lugis spoke with admiration and with deep thoughts. He was just like a child who had seen a mountain of treasure.
Agathos was astonished for a moment and then anger at Lugis’ thoughtlessness came next. Intense emotions began swirling in her heart when she pouted her lips.
Lugis didn’t understand anything.
Just how strong that evil dragon was, how few enemies it had, and how much it reigned supreme. To the Great Demon, even a magical devilish being was no threat.
「I told you. Killing that monster with just slashing won’t work. Besides, without me you’d have no chance at all. I don’t understand why you’re so optimistic. Do you understand how much of a threat it is? You won’t be able to reach his neck with your blade! 」
「It’ll be fine if you lift me off the ground, right? And Agathos, there’s absolutely no one in this world that you can’t kill. I can definitely kill this thing. 」
What kind of confidence was that? Lugis was no different from a slightly larger insect to Vrilligant.
Of course, Altia had already killed Vrilligant once, so it meant that Vrilligant could be killed. But that didn’t mean it could be done now.
Just as Vrilligant was a monster, Altia was even more of a monster. It wasn’t like the weak overcame the strong.
It was impossible for the weak to defeat the strong according to the laws of the world.
But Lugis said this.
「If it’s impossible according to the laws of the world, then it’s not impossible to go against those very laws…By the way. Agathos, where do you plan to go after you run away from this place? 」
Agathos felt a stab in her heart upon hearing his words. Cold sweat ran down her cheeks.
If she managed to escape from Vrilligant, then she would have to submit to a strong person next. In other words, either a spirit god who had lost his mind, or a great spirit that only lived in the Elven Forest. But either way, both were far from their prime.
Would they be able to compete with Vrilligant? Perhaps both would just end up running away in the end.
「Agathos, I know very well. There will never be a convenient tomorrow. All we have is today, and only today. Listen, I will kill this dragon here. Today is going to be a wonderful day. 」
Agathos gasped and opened her jewel-like eyes.
It seemed that Lugis was beginning to grasp a piece of his human memory. He was close to his former self. There may have been a change in his fate moved by Rabel’s Gears.
Agathos thought so. This must be the reason why Filaret was so infatuated with this man. His strong ego and will, which seemed like a curse. His words and passion were enough to move the hearts of others.
For a moment, Agathos felt a lump in her chest. Could he really kill Vrilligant? Could he even do it?
Agathos placed her fingertips naturally on her mouth. If she wanted to save Filaret, then this was her only chance. The more time passed, the more she would transform into the heart itself. If that happened, Filaret would no longer be herself.
So this was her last chance.
Agathos let out a light sigh. Her jewels sparkled even more, increasing in number. Then she stretched her neck. The dragon’s jaws rose higher after looking up at the sky.
She spoke to Leu in her mind.
『I’m sorry, but I can’t take care of you now. This is a desperate situation. 』
『You have to do it regardless of what I think. It’s for Lady Filaret and Lord Lugis’ sake. 』
Leu answered with a bitter smile. Agathos didn’t like her attitude but didn’t argue.
This was for the sake of the beautiful beings on this continent that she liked. Beauty and ugliness were everything to Agathos. They were beautiful, and the dragon was ugly.
What? It was quite simple if she put it that way. The answer had been decided from the beginning. Agathos said while distorting her lips.
「I will kill you if you die. So you should do the same. 」
「Okay. Let’s kill it by all means, even you have to abandon me in the end. 」
The two magical devilish beings combined their fighting spirits. The mighty evil dragon roared.
A wonderful day had begun.
