Chapter 503: The Tracks that Continued to this Day
The magical devilish being Lugis smiled while carrying the bronze dragon Shadraput on his back.
He laughed again in his head. It was a rare but honest expression for a demonic Lugis.
「What do you think? That human is enduring, isn’t he? 」
The battle with the demons could only be seen from afar, but it was clear. The Sorcerer General Mastigius overpowered the magical devilish being Junelva. Doha Surah had joined in to help, which was surprising, but that didn’t really matter.
Having something on your side was also a strength.
「So, Shad. What do you think of him, your former comrade? Is that brainless bird the kind of person who will die easily? 」
Lugis asked Shadraput, still resting on his elbows. Shadraput answered while hiding behind him and looking ahead over his shoulder. It was a strange sight to see the tall Shadraput hiding behind the seated Lugis.
「…Amazing, it’s very impressive. I know that Junelva has died many times before since attaining his demonic form. I must say that even if he’s not immortal, he doesn’t die that easily. 」
Shadraput’s voice was imposing, even though she was hiding behind Lugis’ back. She probably didn’t remember that she had broken her promise with Doha Surah.
All that interested Shadraput was whether or not he was a threat. And even now, in this situation, she still didn’t think that humanity could kill Junelva.
When Junelva was a god, he didn’t die no matter how many fatal wounds Vrilligant inflicted on his body. That past was probably still very much in the core of his current Original Text.
If those humans really wanted to kill that thing, then they’d have to deal fatal blows many times over, then turn Junelva into a lump of flesh, and finally destroy its skull.
That was too harsh for humanity. Shadraput had many doubts even looking at the results now. Even with Doha Surah’s help, how long could they hold out?
Shadraput looked up into the air. There was a shining sun before her eyes. An unusual heat seemed to clear the clouds amid the death snow. Sweat ran down her cheeks.
It felt like a normal day before the death snow arrived.
Suddenly, Shadraput looked up at the sun. Why was it so hot today? Thinking about this, she slumped her shoulders. Ah, that’s what it is, she understood. This was probably what Junelva wanted to do.
The Gear Rabel must have had a hand in it too. Junelva shouldn’t have been able to do this on his own in his current state.
Shadraput cleared her throat and whispered to Lugis. She seemed careful not to be heard by the people around.
「…Hey, listen. Why don’t you escape with me now? If we’re not careful, the city will be wiped out. I’ll be safer with you. 」
Sudden and simplistic words. Anyone would have trouble grasping her true meaning. Lugis frowned and turned around, wondering what she was talking about.
But Shadraput’s expression was undoubtedly serious. She took a step back on her hind legs, as if she was thinking of getting away as quickly as possible.
Shadraput looked up again, as if to encourage Lugis’ gaze. There was an unusually large sun.
「…The sun is very close, isn’t it? I don’t know what happened, but Junelva is pushing himself too hard. If Rabel is pushing herself hard too, then we should back off for now. 」
The sun emitted a brilliant light and heat…no, it was a huge mass of magic. It began to roar little by little, and the capital of the Bolvat Dynasty began to come into view.
No one had noticed yet, except for Shadraput and Lugis.
—
His center of gravity was low. His legs were thrust forward, and his wings were stretched out majestically behind him. That was Junelva’s stance. The poisonous magical power rippled, making his body appear even larger.
It was rare for a demon to take a stance. A stance was meant to be taken in order to fight an enemy. For magical devilish beings, who had few potential enemies, a fighting stance was something they weren’t familiar with.
In other words, at this moment, the Poisonous Junelva recognized the Sorcerer General Mastigius and the Demonic Eyed Beast Doha Surah as enemies.
As if sensing their master’s will, the demons swelled up and meshed together. Caution and tension engulfed the surroundings with just their gazes.
The air grew thinner with each passing second. It wasn’t strange that someone’s life was lost every time someone breathed. The end was instantaneous no matter how exquisite a battle was. Doha Surah took the initiative, putting his legs forward to close the distance between him and his enemy. Mastigius had pushed himself too hard and was already wounded, but as a demonic beast, Doha Surah was somehow stronger.
Besides, now was a good opportunity. The magical devilish being Junelva had been paralyzed by Mastigius’ powerful magic.
The distance and initiative in battle were all on the side of humanity.
In that case, they just had to crush the enemy as it was. The surprise attacks were effective because they shocked the enemy, who was unable to exert their strength.
His demonic eyes opened wide. It was different from when Junelva dissolved things with poison, as the material weathered and crumbled into grains of sand.
With his demonic eye, Doha Surah looked at the pillars of a house that had not yet decayed.
「Just wither and fall, Poisonous Junelva. 」
He just stared. With just that action, the pillars of the house were scattered into sand, and with a loud noise they collapsed entirely. The wreckage of two houses surged towards Junelva with great force. A dark shadow hid the poisonous bird’s body as if to protect it.
But Junelva still made no attempt to dodge.
Both Doha Surah and Junelva understood that this was merely a diversion. Making unnecessary movements and leaving an opening would be the worst thing they could do.
They would undoubtedly attack after the house had collapsed.
Junelva steadied his breathing as he increased the output of poison. Each time he did, he felt a tingling sensation in his internal organs he had never felt before. For now, he was forcing magical power to circulate to keep his other organs functioning, but this was only a temporary measure.
The destruction caused by Mastigius was beyond what any demon could repair during battle. It might be different for a regenerated magical devilish being like Drigman, but Junelva didn’t possess such powers.
But it was also true that he wouldn’t die from this. Junelva’s Original Text didn’t allow him to be bound by death.
Normally, Junelva should’ve chosen to retreat. He had grasped the enemy’s hand, and his limitations. On the other hand, the enemy didn’t know his limitations.
Victory would be certain once his internal organs were repaired. And there was no one in this world who could keep up with Junelva’s mobility.
But he didn’t show even a single sign of wanting to run away.
This was due to his pride and confidence as a magical devilish being. And the image of that demonic-eyed beast, who had betrayed his comrades and fled, was burned all too vividly into his mind.
…I can’t leave now.
A certain pride in Junelva was driving him at this moment.
It wasn’t wrong to say that he was confident. Junelva hadn’t thought about being defeated right here and now.
Wood chips, furniture, and bricks from the collapsed houses all rained down on Junelva. However, they melted and disappeared as soon as they touched his body.
The poison was still strong, covering Junelva’s body. The eyes of a bird of prey simply peered out at his enemy from between the collapsing trees.
Sand flew and lightning flashed. He was unable to move.
He knew that the enemy would close their eyes and then pour out their magic or authority on him. So he shouldn’t move to avoid it, but to take advantage of the opportunity immediately after it was unleashed.
It was truly a bird of prey hunt. Junelva sharpened his senses from within the collapsed rubble.
After a blink, lightning blasted the rubble away, and a sandstorm covered the surroundings. It was exactly as Junelva had imagined.
The magic and the power of the evil eye were incredibly violent. There was no doubt that it was something that was coming to put an end to his life.
…But this wouldn’t kill him. Junelva was convinced. And so he resignedly accepted it.
At the same time, the poisonous magical power that had been residing only around Junelva began to eat away at his surroundings in an attempt to counterattack. It seemed ready to devour people, houses, and the world itself.
Junelva thought so. What he desired was freedom that couldn’t be tied down by anything. So he would melt this entire place and win his freedom once again.
At the end of his field of vision was the pseudo-sun that reflected his origin. It had grown in size again.
