A Wish To Grab Happiness – Volume 16 – Chapter 489

Chapter 489: Executioner

A bright sunlight pierced the earth, illuminating the cityscape.

It was only slightly warm, but Kiel Bazarov felt the heat from that alone, nearly burning his skin. Nerves ran all the way to his fingertips, and he was losing his sanity every single minute.

Kiel’s appearance had changed drastically. His gentle appearance was gone, and he was constantly moving his eyes, looking around. All he was waiting for was the execution of Sorcerer General Mastigius La Volgograd.

Mastigius would die here today. Was that really true?

Kiel asked himself without thinking. That monster was going to die. It was hard to believe. He sunken his eyes and swung them around.

Though he was the one who had suggested this public execution, his doubts grew as time passed. Mastigius was the epitome of a great sorcerer. Even though he had been defeated by the demons, would he really die so easily on the execution platform?

Kiel repeated the unanswered question over and over again.

…And then, the time came. The demonic birds began to cry one after another, announcing the start of the executions.

The organizers included Kiel, as the human supreme commander, and Nutt, the Capital’s current king. The audience included a large number of people. Everyone was looking at the execution grounds anxiously, unable to leave. The demons were watching from behind their backs.

The hastily constructed execution platform and wooden collar were made for the purpose of taking a life. Normally only intended for criminals.

But now it was different. Standing before them were the heroes who had risked their lives to fight for the Bolvat Dynasty.

Those heroes were being executed as criminals. It was a twisted sight.

None of the people knew why they were there. Even though what they were about to see was the manifestation of evil. They couldn’t turn their backs. Those people felt that leaving would only lead to an even worse nightmare.

The demons yanked on the iron chains, driving Bolvat’s sorcerers and elite soldiers to the execution platform. Some of them struggled, but there was nothing anyone could do since everyone was surrounded by demonic creatures.

About ten people were lined up, side by side, and secured to the execution platform. The people held their breath. The demons each raised their weapons.

…And a moment later, ten heads fell. Countless blood spurted out towards the people.

Screams echoed from all around. The shock of seeing someone’s death greatly shook a person’s mind. Some people no longer felt confident to stand on the ground.

However, there was no choice but to accept it. The people were stunned and just watched their own soldiers die.

「Hmm, damn, this is so boring! It would’ve been better to have them fight each other with weapons. 」

Nutt, the Capital’s current king, said as he drank wine in the prepared VIP seat. He was usually so busy that he couldn’t drink, but today, thanks to this entertainment, he had time to drink wine. He was in a very good mood because of that.

「No. This is fine. They could fight back if we gave them even a little freedom. Besides, there’s no point in giving those people useless hope. 」

「Hmm, that’s the thinking of a coward. I don’t understand! You were raised as a human, but now you belong to the demon side, so why are you afraid of humans? 」

Nutt opened his mouth in obvious contempt for Kiel. His blue feathers fluttered and caressed the air. Kiel looked down at the execution platform, hands clasped together, without even a moment’s consideration for Nutt.

He watched as one head after another slid down the stairs. There may have been people he had spoken to in the past, but Kiel could no longer remember them. To Kiel, they were merely pawns in his game.

And it was his turn after about a hundred heads had been chopped off. The people let out an unexpected cry.

He finally came, both of his wrists fastened in iron restraints, led by chains. Rather than a criminal, he carried himself with a dignified presence. His black hair even fluttered in the wind.

Accompanied by his trusted vice-commanders, Mastigius stood before the people for the first time in months. It was noticeable that the people were concerned for their general, Mastigius.

Unaware, Kiel rose from his seat. His heart throbbed.

「…Mastigius! It seems your time to die has finally come. Die here like a street dog! 」

The people fell silent at Kiel’s words. Over the past few months, the people knew very well who the ruler of this city was.

Even if it was a hated enemy, they had no choice but to keep their mouths shut. Only one person could reply to Kiel.

「…Everyone will die eventually. You and I too. 」

Kiel’s gaze intensified when Mastigius took a step forward to say those words. The wooden collar was placed around his thick neck.

「Your Excellency…Your Excellency Mastigius. 」

Among the vice-commanders chained to either side of him, Eileen let out an involuntary cry. Her lips, which she had been desperately biting, were bleeding. The blood was soaked with both dignity and humiliation.

On the other hand, Hind just stared ahead in silence. He glared at those demons with murderous eyes. He had not accepted his death.

Then, the three were roughly placed on the execution platform by demons’ hands.

The messenger bird cried out loudly. The earlobes of the people shuddered.

「Welcome, welcome! …The magical devilish being Lugis has arrived! 」

Even Mastigius opened his eyes. He couldn’t believe his ears, and then his eyes. As he was dying, he wondered if he was having a strange dream.

It came from the entrance where executioners usually came and went.

His aura was more violent than when they last met, and he had a sinister devilish sword on his shoulder. Unlike before, his blood-splattered red eyes looked down on people with ease and seemed to be filled with hatred. His clothes, his appearance, everything was different.

It was only here that Mastigius showed signs of agitation. Questions and emotions mixed together in his heart and were spat out of his mouth in a voiceless voice.

「…Is…that you, Lugis? 」

「Huh? What’s the matter? Too many people know my name. I don’t even know you. 」

But it’s fine, Lugis thought after a pause. Lugis pulled his sword out of its sheath. The pulsating, lightning-glowing demonic sword now roared as the blade of the guillotine.

The people and the surrounding demons swallowed for a moment. No one knew what it was, but everyone could see that it was no ordinary sword.

「They say how a human dies is important, right? I’m a dirty bastard, but what about you? If you have anything left to say, I’ll listen to it. 」

Those three humans were about to die. The magical devilish being Lugis titled his neck as if he didn’t feel any weight of it.

A distant commotion was beginning to reach his ears.

Oilland, a Bolvat soldier, opened his eyes wide and looked at the scene. His wicked-looking eyes involuntarily wavered.

The square in front of the Imperial Guards’ headquarters had turned into an execution ground. With the goal of recapturing Mastigius, he and his soldiers had blended in with the people. As planned, the demons were unable to control the overwhelming number of people who had gathered in the square.

The sight of fellow soldiers being executed one after another was hellish. The humiliation of having to abandon those who were his comrades was too great.

However, if they stepped in carelessly, the demons would surely isolate Mastigius or kill him on the spot. The reason for this was because the enemy recognized his importance.

That was why they had no choice but to wait. They had to wait for the moment Mastigius would be exposed to the public. Yes, for the moment he would be brought out in front of the people and be executed. That would be the perfect opportunity to recapture him.

And so the time had come.

…A disaster was next to him. The magical devilish being Lugis stood before Mastigius with a calm demeanor.

A hero. He was a human who should’ve been a hero. But what had happened? He looked so demonic. He was going to kill Mastigius as his executioner.

What was this? What was going on? Oilland covered his mouth with a look of confusion in his eyes. He felt as if the world had been turned upside down from beneath his feet.

In the distance, the sound of iron striking iron could be heard. It was probably proof that a misleading unit led by Caria was in action. The plan was for them to attract those demons so that Oilland’s side would be clear.

But it was a completely different story now that a magical devilish being had appeared. Until now, the magical devilish beings Rabel and Junelva had rarely appeared in public, which was exactly why he had come up with this plan.

There was a moment of hesitation. Mastigius’ voice was heard the moment Oilland twisted his lips.

「…That’s quite a figure. It suits you. 」

  1. That last line… He clearly doesn’t have his father-in-law’s approval. If Lugis does kill him, Filaret will be in hell from now on.
    Thanks for the chapter.
